Three widely acclaimed biographies of Latin American tyrants, written by Bernard Diederich have been re-issued and are available.

These books focus on the lives of Anastasio Somoza of Nicaragua, Rafael Trujillo of the Dominican Republic, and "Papa Doc" Duvalier of Haiti (this latter was co-authored with Al Burt of the Miami Herald).

They are, however, much more than biographies. They are fascinating eyewitness accounts of contemporary history, and provide invaluable insight into the societies that they describe.

Graham Greene has written : "Bernard Diederich, with his books on Duvalier, Trujillo and Somoza, proves himself an indispensable historian" for the region.
